The hospital pharmacy of the General University Hospital in Prague provides a wide range of specialized pharmaceutical care, which is an integral part of comprehensive health care in one of the largest healthcare facilities in the Czech Republic. The priority is to ensure safe, effective and rational pharmacotherapy, to ensure the quality, efficacy and safety of administered and dispensed medicinal products, both for hospitalized and outpatient patients. Furthermore, the pharmacy provides a comprehensive preparation of sterile, non-sterile and cytotoxic dosage forms.
The hospital pharmacy provides comprehensive supply of clinical departments with medicines, infusion solutions, and some diagnostic and laboratory products. The pharmacy staff actively monitors the availability of medicines on the market, resolves shortages, and ensures replacement and extraordinary imports in accordance with applicable legislation. In cooperation with clinics, they also ensure the dispensing of medicines under a special regime, including medicines with limited availability or specific use.
The VFN hospital pharmacy also operates three dispensaries for the public, which are accessible to the general public at strategic locations on the VFN premises. These dispensaries dispense prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, food supplements, cosmetics and other pharmaceutical products. Each dispensary has knowledgeable pharmacists who provide professional advice and assistance in selecting suitable medicines and medical devices. The Faust House is home to a medical supplies dispensary, which specializes in providing a wide range of medical devices for outpatient patients. Our dispensary provides professional advice and assistance in selecting medical devices, including devices for patients with chronic diseases or after surgical procedures.
Another focus of the hospital pharmacy is the preparation of individually manufactured medicinal products, both in sterile (injection solutions, eye drops) and non-sterile (ointments, capsules, suspensions) dosage forms. A key segment is also the preparation of cytotoxic drugs and parenteral nutrition in specialized aseptic conditions, using modern technology and under strict quality and sterility assurance.
Clinical pharmaceutical consultancy plays an important role in the dispensary activities in both inpatient and outpatient care. Our pharmacists participate in influencing medication plans, evaluate prescriptions in terms of interactions, suitability and safety, and provide professional consultations to patients, doctors and nursing staff. The activity also includes monitoring the occurrence of adverse drug reactions and active participation in the pharmacovigilance system.
The VFN Hospital Pharmacy is also a teaching workplace for undergraduate and postgraduate education of pharmacists and healthcare professionals. It participates in the education of students of the Faculty of Pharmacy of Charles University and Masaryk University and actively cooperates with other educational institutions. The VFN Pharmacy also participates in clinical trials and other projects focused on the development and innovation of pharmacotherapy.
In all our activities, we emphasize adherence to the principles of good pharmacy practice, safe handling of medicines and consistent quality control. Our priority is patient safety and a high professional level of the services provided.
