What to do when there is a shortage of medicines?

How to proceed in case of shortage of medicines containing ibuprofen and paracetamol

Pharmacies in the Czech Republic continue to struggle with a large-scale shortage of medicinal products, which, due to the flu season, is particularly noticeable in preparations for fever and pain (this applies mainly to children's syrups and suppositories).

In the event of a child's illness, it is therefore possible:

  • give children from 9 kg tablets for children containing 125 mg of paracetamol,
  • give children over 20 kg half a tablet containing paracetamol for adults, tablets for children containing 125 mg of paracetamol, tablets with ibuprofen in a dose of 200 mg or a hot drink with paracetamol for juniors,
  • for children under 9 kg or 20 kg are intended for syrups and suppositories for children, or individually prepared suppositories or capsules with paracetamol or individually prepared suppositories with ibuprofen.

VFN pharmacists in Prague are solving the current situation by using their own, individually prepared medicinal products (suppositories containing ibuprofen and paracetamol) to at least partially cover the shortage. These products have a shorter expiration date and there is no point in stockpiling them.

It is always good to follow the recommended dosage according to the age and weight of the child. Do not hesitate to contact your pharmacist if you have any questions. It is important to keep calm and not to stockpile medicines at home.
