Prevention and treatment of burnt skin

Placeholder

The sun benefits our skin for several reasons:

  • improves resistance and ability to regenerate,
  • increases skin blood flow and vitamin D levels,
  • reduces the microbial population of the skin surface,
  • positive effect on the psyche.

If we expose our skin to sunlight for too long, we can easily burn. In general, it is not recommended to expose the skin to the sun's rays between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

It is appropriate:

  • wear a head covering and good clothing,
  • use sunscreen products with a protective factor (take special care with birthmarks, acne or scars), apply at least 15-30 minutes before staying in the sun and repeat several times during the day (ideally after 2 hours),
  • follow a drinking regimen (hydrate from the inside as well),
  • avoid using deodorants, antiperspirants and perfumes before tanning (they can cause skin irritation or color spots).

As first aid after sunburn, we can use a cold compress that we apply to the burnt skin or a cold shower (if no blisters have formed).

Medications that effectively suppress itching and burning include locally or globally acting antihistamines and can also be used in the event of a sun allergy.

Preparations containing dexpanthenol in the form of a spray or foam work excellently for healing and regeneration of affected skin (reduces inflammation and restores the skin's barrier function).

Gels and creams with a higher water content are more suitable for use, which cool the skin pleasantly.

Repeated sunburns should not be underestimated in any case - it dries out the skin, accelerates aging and, last but not least, increases the risk of skin cancer.
