Antibiotic resistance is on the rise!

Antibiotic resistance continues to rise

November marked the 11th anniversary of World Antibiotic Awareness Week, which is organized by the World Health Organization and annually draws attention to the increasing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics. This concept emphasizes the responsible use of antibiotics (ATB) and draws attention to their decreasing effectiveness.

According to data from the State Institute for Drug Control (SÚKL), the actual consumption of antibiotics in the Czech Republic has increased significantly in the last five years. While the number of packages issued remains relatively stable, the number of defined daily doses (DDD) is still increasing. This trend reflects the fact that Czechs are using antibiotics more intensively than before (they are receiving higher doses and/or longer treatment courses) and the treatment of infections is becoming more difficult precisely because of increasing antibiotic resistance.

This situation is also complicated by lay use - storing leftover antibiotics in reserve and starting self-treatment without a medical examination (without establishing a diagnosis, determining the correct type of antibiotic for a specific bacterial infection).

According to data from the State Institute of Health (SZÚ), resistant strains of bacteria that cause respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections and pneumonia are most commonly found in the Czech Republic, especially in people with weakened immunity, seniors and hospitalized patients.

Antibiotic resistance not only complicates the treatment of common infections, but also prolongs hospital stays and increases the cost of therapy, thus having a significant impact on the entire healthcare system.

Pharmacists play a key role in the fight against antibiotic resistance, having been involved in this issue for a long time:

· check the correct dosage,

· they appeal to adhere to precisely defined intervals and for a prescribed period of time,

· explain the principles of proper use of antibiotics,

· warn about possible side effects or drug interactions, etc.

Compliance with rules to promote the rational use and prescription of antibiotics in the Czech Republic can significantly influence consumption.
